Regular readers of Make, Do and Push! will know that we have been recording Indy’s sleep (or more often than not, lack of sleep) in our bi-weekly Bubbaroo Baby Sleep Diary on here… and if you follow me on Twitter, you may have seen my daily morning update! As part of the Bubbaroo Baby Sleep Diary, we have been sent some products from Bubbaroo to try, and today I’m writing about the Joey Swag sleeping bag.
For those of you who haven’t heard of Bubbaroo previously, they are an Australian company founded and run by Mama of two, Nicole, who started designing sleeping products for babies as a result of firsthand experience; her first born suffered from reflux, a symptom of this being an extreme startle reflex which meant he kept waking himself up, so the Joey Swaddle was born! A whole range was developed as Nicole’s children grew.
“Swag” in Australian means: “to travel with one’s personal belongings in a bundle”, so the name Joey Swag is ideal for this wonderful sleeping bag.
I much prefer the use of sleeping bags over blankets for our children. I remember frequently waking to check on Busby when she was a baby if she was wrapped in a blanket, worrying that she might somehow end up with it over her face, and it’s been no different with Indy (especially as he is quite the fidget at night!).
We were sent two different sleeping bags – the first with a tog of 0.5, which is the lightweight tog for warmer nights. This is the sleeping bag Indy is wearing in the photos in this post, in white with stone binding. We have also been sent a 2.5 heavyweight tog bag, in mocha, which is currently too big for Indy as it’s age 6-18 months, but will be perfect for the winter nights ahead.
The Joey Swag sleeping bag is ideal for fidgety Indy, as the bags have been specially designed for babies to move freely while staying covered. He hated being swaddled, so it allows him freedom to move without feeling restricted! This makes the bag a super safe product!
The two-way zip-up system and poppers on the arms (in the 0-6 months Joey Swag bag) means Indy can’t slip down inside the bag. The zips are YKK brand 2-way zippers with zip guards, which make them safe for little hands. Even though Bubbaroo are an Australian company, all of the Joey Swag bags comply with British Standard BS 8510:2009 Safety of children’s sleep bags.
Joey Swag’s most exciting and unique feature has to be that it can be used with a carseat or pushchair (any travel system with a three or five point harness). The sleeping bag has an access point at the back for the base of the harness, and a hole can be created at the front with the two zips. This is such a fantastic idea – perfect for parents who pick up their children already bathed and in pyjamas from family/childminders, as they can be easily transferred to bed straight from the car if they fall asleep. This would have been ideal when Busby was a baby, as Nick used to take her out in car on nights where she wouldn’t sleep to help her fall asleep and she would always wake up when we tried to get her into the sleeping bag once back in the house!
The Bubbaroo Joey Swag bags start at £24.95 for a lightweight tog bag. The Swag bags go up to a 3.5 tog and come in lots of different designs to suit every family. The Joey Swag bags can be purchased on the Bubbaroo website.
